Why does Acne scarring occur?
Acne scarring occurs because of the inflammation in the skin caused by acne. When the inflammatory process occurs tissue is destroyed, as the body attempts to heal the wounds caused by acne, this can result in an excess of collagen built up, making the scars raised or ‘bumpy’. The collagen may also be lost, creating depressed or hollowed indentations in the skin creating different types of scarring.
The after effects of acne leaves many patients feeling self-conscious with low self-esteem as they are harder to conceal due to the uneven texture and smoothness of the skin. Acne and acne scarring can seriously affect patients’ quality of life, for example, often preventing them from socialising or feeling confident at work and relationships. This is a very important factor to consider when treating acne or scars.
